A slip is not the end
Quitting nicotine often takes more than one try. A lapse can feel discouraging, but the practice you've built — the cravings you've already handled and the routines you've changed — doesn't disappear.
Four steps after a lapse
- Pause without judgment. Beating yourself up tends to make the next craving harder, not easier.
- Look at what happened. Where were you? Who were you with? How were you feeling? That's your most useful clue.
- Update your plan. Add a specific response for that situation. Our trigger guide has ideas.
- Choose your next step. Get back to your plan today, or set a fresh quit date if that feels more realistic.
Keep an honest record
It helps to track progress in a way that doesn't hide lapses but doesn't erase your history either. In the CraveBreaker app, a lapse keeps your original quit date and your total vape-free days, while your current stretch starts fresh. Earned milestones stay earned.
If lapses keep happening
That's a sign to get more support, not a sign you can't quit. A quitline coach, doctor or pharmacist can help you look at what's getting in the way. In the U.S., call 1-800-QUIT-NOW; in Canada, 1-866-366-3667.
